Winemaker Notes
The Syrah is planted at the top part of the vineyard, higher up than the Pinot Noir vines that compromise most of most of Garys’ vineyard (of the 50 acres planted, 42 are Pinot Noir and the other 8 acres are Syrah). This vineyard ripens very late, sometimes going into early November! It’s treated in a similar fashion to the Syrah we get from Pisoni. Lots of whole clusters, native yeast and about 1/3 new oak. I am much more influenced by the northern Rhone style of Syrah, Cote-Rotie and Hermitage come quickly to mind, than by the southern Australia style. In others words I prefer more meaty, bacon fat, deep, dark fruited wine with good acidity to a more jammy and high octane style. At the winery, in many years, this is our favorite wine. Is incredibly dense but never loses its focus and all the elements; fruit, oak, tannin and alcohol are beautifully integrated. I’m not sure we can make a better Syrah than this!
